“They are a very good family” is one of the most common sentences in matrimonial discussions. But different people mean very different things by it.
For some, it means education and financial stability. For others, social reputation, religious practice, manners or family connections. These things may matter, but they do not automatically tell you how the family treats a daughter-in-law, son-in-law, domestic staff, older relatives or people with less status.
Questions worth asking early
A useful understanding of a good family should include everyday behaviour: Do they speak respectfully when they disagree? Are women and men allowed to have opinions? Do they keep promises? How do they handle conflict? Can they admit mistakes? Are boundaries respected?
Reputation is useful information, but behaviour is better information. A family should not only look respectable from outside. It should feel safe and respectful from inside.
